Girls, gays and theys of LA where were you Thursday, February 22nd? Because we were getting down at the girli concert in West Hollywood, CA. The Troubadour in West Hollywood was home to the first stop of girli’s 2024 Matriarchy Tour. This marks her second tour within the US, which features a total of six stops through North America before heading to Europe.
Back in 2017 after releasing several singles girli dropped her first EP Feel OK and is now set to release her second full length album Matriarchy later this year. Matriarchy contains 14 tracks and you can currently listen to it’s title song of the same name, 'Be With Me' and 'Nothing Hurts Like a Girl' on music streaming platforms.
Stepping out with hand drawn white stars on her face, long embellished nails and her signature pink hair this London born singer/ songwriter showcased many of her earlier hits as well as a few unreleased tracks, such as 'Crush Me Up' and 'Feel My Feelings', from her upcoming album. The singer described new song 'Crush Me Up' as being about the feeling when you like someone and “you just want to inject them in your veins”.
Fans were excited to get a glimpse into girli’s upcoming album as well as hear music from throughout the singer’s catalogue. They could be seen dancing and singing along throughout the night to songs like 'Hot Mess', 'Be With Me' and the song that introduced me to girli back in 2020 'Letter to My Ex'.
Accompanied by opener tiLLie and on stage supported by one backup singer and drummer girli mentioned how it was important to fill her tour with women stating, “The Music Industry is full of CIS straight men, we don’t need anymore of those”, myself and the crowd couldn’t agree more.
Girli goes on to describe how in the context of the album the word matriarchy is "a place where anyone who doesn’t thrive under the current patriarchy… it’s a safe space for people to be free”.
Hoping that Matriarchy provides more recognition to this talented artist who embodies a true pop girly and creates music that provides a strong emphasis on feminism, sexuality, defying social norms and creating safe spaces.
Fuck the patriarchy, we’re headed into the era of the Matriarchy!
Matriarchy Tour hits six North American cities including Los Angeles and Austin, with stops left in Chicago, Toronto, New York and Washington DC. Tickets can be purchased on girli's website.
